Wish You Were Here
Description
"We desire a house with a sea view and one day we all may get that opportunity, whether we like it or not." - Pete McKee
Created for Pete's 2022 Don't Adjust Your Mindset exhibition, this work explores climate change and the Earth’s increasing fragility by referencing postcard culture in which messages from the sender are written on the card’s image. The juxtaposition of the cheery message coupled with the devastation at the bottom of the cliff, creates tension. This tension is a metaphor for how many of us feel about climate change. Even though we worry about it and, to varying degrees, do what we can to combat it, we often feel powerless.
In the painting static caravans line the top of the cliff, overlooking the sea. Above them is an expanse of bright blue sky. The occupants are oblivious to the destruction below. This references how some governments, corporations and individuals would prefer to ignore what is going on right under their noses. The irreparably damaged caravan, which has been smashed to smithereens, symbolises the irreversible damage occurring because of climate change, as well as representing the many homes that will inevitably be lost or damaged.
