Description
Created for the Exhibition: The Boy With A Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
I didn’t know I had another brother till he returned home from the RAF
and I was hoiked out of my own bedroom and made to share a room
with our Ian. Stuart had served his time in the RAF as ground technician,
repairing bits of random machinery, but as far as I was concerned – and as
I told my mates at school – he was a fighter pilot.
Though I did resent his intrusion into my world – and my exile from my
cowboy-and-Indian-wallpapered room – he had brought with him, in a big
trunk, an array of treasure from his travels around the world. This made
him seem exotic and mysterious.
Over time he became someone I looked up to: literally, as he was fifteen
years older than me and over six foot.
One of the things we did together was play darts. The absolute pinnacle
of working-class chic is a dart board in the back of your living room.
Darts is a wonderful sport and probably the only one you can actually
100% believe you could become a professional at if you put the time in
to practise.
