Youth Club Disco
Description
Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
'The Rowlinson Youth Club Disco was a beautiful place to be in the ’80s. There was an array of different music styles, each one represented by a twenty-minute stint on the turntables. Me and my mates would bide our time till the ska segment, then take to the dance floor and try and emulate the moves of Jerry Dammers, Neville Staples, Chas Smash and Buster Bloodvessel. By the end we were a hot sweaty mess, happily exiting up the stairs for a cheap Coke and a Drumstick lolly from the tuck shop. Down in the dance room, the strains of another genre would be pulsing now; maybe it was the Goths’ or the New Romantics’ turn to strut.
I’ll never forget the time when Adam and the Ants’ “Ant Music” came out: a truly great song. Genn and Skids sat in the middle of the dance floor, both whipped out a pair of drumsticks and proceeded to drum along on the floor to the infamous rap-a-tap-tap intro. Awe-inspiring.'
