The Arrival

Created for Frank and Joy: a Love Story Exhibition 2023

'The previous nine months had all been preparation for this day. The overtime, the coppers saved, the clothes donated, and the hand-me-down cot repainted Council Green. That the green was the same shade as the railings in the nearby park may or may not be a coincidence. The spare room was reappropriated and would be renamed once Joy’s bundle arrived. Joy worked until her bump got in the way of the buffing wheel – the glow of motherhood outshining even the gleaming knives she
polished to perfection. Baby Tina came into this world on a rainy winter’s afternoon, filling her lungs with Sheffield air and heaving a precious life-affirming cry. Later that night, Frank left the pub with a skinful of beer inside him, stood in the street, and yelled through his tears: “I’M A DAD!”'
