Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
'“Flick to kick” is the Subbuteo slogan. On the Batemoor it was more like “don’t judge the fudge”. The fudging technique was the preferred style among me and my mates.
I got the floodlights set for my birthday. This sounds very grand, but they ran on these big batteries that looked like they could power a nuclear sub. And in fact when you switched off the big light in the living room and turned on the floodlights, it actually got darker.
An occupational hazard for a Subbuteo player was Death by Knee. We played on the living-room carpet and sooner or later a player would get knelt on in the heat of the game. And you could spend just as much time smoothing out the creases on the pitch as you did playing.
When a player got a potentially career-ending knee-crush injury, you could revive him by fixing his shattered ankles back on to the base with aircraft glue. But, like in proper football, they are never really the same again.'
