Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee

'My big sis was the first to leave the fold, moving to a bungalow out at Aston, a new-build estate, just up from the Sutherland Spread factory on the outskirts of Rotherham. It took two buses to get there, so my sis put in a monumental shift returning weekly to check up on my dad and generally make sure everything was in order. She had a big heart and an even bigger smile. Which belied her sadistic streak: she generally took it upon herself to give my face a good fettle. She would squeal with glee as blackhead after blackhead would unravel from my lard-diet visage as a result of her rigorous squeezing. “Ooh, look how much I got out there!” she would declare with joy, showing me the fruits of her toil sitting on the end of her fingernail. As uncomfortable as it was, I cherished those blissful moments of affection. Our Stuart would quip, “He must be allergic to soap!” Maybe I was – for a good reason.
