Ingoldmells Memories - Original Painting
Description
Created for the Exhibition: The Boy With A Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
We’d only just arrived at the caravan site but Mum wanted to stretch her
legs. Dad and our Ian got things sorted with the booking-in and getting
the cases off the coach and into our caravan; me and Mum went to explore
the walk to the beach and see how far it was to the seafront. It was windy,
so Mum put her scarf on to keep her holiday hairdo intact, and slipped
her sunglasses on to keep the sand out of her eyes. With that she instantly
turned into a northern Grace Kelly. Practical glamour. We headed off to
uncover the secrets of Ingoldmells.
Down a sand-blown lane flanked by high hedgerows and telegraph poles,
me and Mum were sheltered from the wind by the farmer’s field edges on
one side and the boundary of the massive caravan site on the other.
We followed turn after turn, presumably navigating our way to the front.
The seagulls were either laughing at us or beckoning us to the sea, but in
either case we didn’t seem to be getting any closer. I kept asking if we were
there yet and Mum would reply, “It’s just around this corner.” But it never
was. Until, eventually, we reached the beach only to find our Ian and
Dad already there, dipping their toes in the chilled North Sea waters.
As it turned out, it was only a five-minute walk to the beach from our van,
but I guess Mum was more interested in the journey than the destination.
