In The Top One
Description
"I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one."
As football goes, I only have eyes for my beloved Sheffield Wednesday, so the comings and goings of Derby and Nottingham Forest often pass me by. But, I will concede that the greatest ever manager in the English league was Brian Clough. Not only did his teams play the right way, but he was the embodiment of the maverick spirit – his personality clashed with the authority of the governing body and impeded his rightful advancement to manage the England football team. He was a card-carrying socialist, supporting picket lines and donating to unions, but ultimately he was able to unify a squad of players to play as one; even under the most unique of team building techniques. A true legend. Yes he was flawed ,but his heart was always in the right place.
My homage to this maverick genius shows him stood proud and knowing, with a cheeky smile eluding to his knack of delivering brilliant quotes about his own greatness as a manager. In the background is a pit head and a lower league football stand; both symbolic of the grassroots origins of football and its links with the working class and a nod to support for the miners during the strikes.
