How We Used To Watch Great Moments In Popular Music
Description
Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
'The first gig I went to was The Selecter at the Poly (the music venue changed its name to the Nelson Mandela Building a few years later). The gig was part of a commendable Council initiative called “Rock on the Dole” and tickets were just 50p each. There had been some bovver at a few ska gigs in other towns previously, so anyone arriving at the gig wearing dockers had to remove their laces and hand them to the security on the door. A kid from school known as Wobbly Gob had the highest pair of Doc Marten boots known to mankind. As he was a short lad, it looked like he was wearing a pair of leather lace-up trousers. It took him half an hour to unlace his boots and he nearly missed the gig. There was no way anyone was going to get their original laces back, which really pissed him off as he ended up with a pair of odd laces that only went halfway up his boots. On the bright side, it didn’t take him as long to lace them back up.'
