Great uniforms of WWII
Description
Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
'An obsession with World War II swooped through the schoolyard and into the home. Playground battle re-enactments, toy guns, the Colditz board game, Action Men, war comics, Airfix 1/32-scale military miniatures – these were all standard issue for any growing boy in the ’70s.
I kept my collection of military miniature figures in a Quality Street tin. They were a mixed bunch of nationalities and regiments, all with wobbly bases and bent weapons. I’d spend ages setting them up in the living room, trying to get them to stay upright on the shagpile carpet. We all (secretly) know that, evil or not, the Nazis had the best uniforms.
Our Ian taught me to melt a soldier’s leg or arm over the flame of the gas cooker – not to replicate an horrific battle injury but to try and scam a free box of soldiers off Airfix by claiming it was like that in the box when you’d bought them. I tried it, but then I couldn’t be arsed sending them off, so instead I had an infantry of horribly disfigured servicemen. Brave souls every one of ’em.'
