Council Pop

Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee

'Lolling around the park on a gloriously hot day, meandering past the municipal tennis courts next to the eighteen-hole putting green, on towards the crown green bowlers. You stop to watch, and just ache to pick up one of the beautiful shining Lignum Vitae balls out of the gutter and throw it back to the old guys. You spend some time kicking a ball around: crosses and volleys, World Cup, three-and-in. Hot and sweaty, you stop and call it a day. 

You wish you had the money for an ice lolly from the van but all you can do is look longingly at the pictures on the window and imagine tucking into a Cider Lolly or a Fab. Fortunately, some things are free, such as a well-earned glug of “Council pop” from one of the fountains, installed in the days of philanthropic industrialists and city councils. Just make sure your mouth doesn’t touch the nozzle.'
