Castle Market

Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee

'Built on top of the ruins of Sheffield Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots spent time in captivity (moving between there and Manor Castle), it comprised a meat and fish market and two further floors of small retail units. The building was a modernist architectural delight, unashamed of its 1960s heritage, with its art tiling and glasswork, its natural wood and concrete. Obviously, such details were lost on a snot-nosed kid who had been dragged there under duress to be hauled up and down the stairs and around its crowded floors. The tactic to extract at least some level of cooperation out of me was bribery, whether the reward be a sausage roll, a 50p toy from a toy carousel, or a go on the mechanical horse. Of course, my goal was to get all three, through subterfuge, coercion or tantrum.'
