Created for the Exhibition: A Boy with a Leg Named Brian: Memoirs by Pete McKee
'Want to tell the world what you’re about without making a song and dance about it? Put a button badge on your lapel. The “threepenny-bit” newsagents on Fitzalan Square had a good selection, as did Impulse on Cambridge Street.
In the early days of your musical journey, as you found your way through the ever-changing landscape of popular culture, you could be guilty of mixing your genres: the badge looked good but you weren’t too sure what the music was or what the slogan meant. So Siouxsie and the Banshees could sit next to a Northern Soul “Keep the Faith” clenched fist, which in turn nestled alongside a Fabulous Furry Freak Brother – until you got the hang of it. Even finer tuning would eventually be required: for example, the Madness logo on the same lapel as “The Jam” was very much a no-no.'
