Three Minutes To Lift Off, Mr Stardust
Description
“I absolutely adore David Bowie and have always loved his music. I can still vividly remember the iconic moment he revealed his alter ego Ziggy Stardust for the first time, live on the daytime TV show, Lift Off With Ayesha, referenced in the painting's title. When he appeared as Ziggy it felt like an alien had landed on earth and was showing us the future. Everyone remembers his first appearance as Ziggy on Top of the Pops, partly because this was a more famous TV show at the time and also because the original footage from Lift Off with Ayesha was accidentally deleted by a technician. However, according to a 2019 article written by Esquire, ‘an audience member filmed the show on his home video recorder and experts are now working to save the time-worn tape.’ I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to see it again and not just from memory."
Created for the 2012 Great Moments in Popular Music Exhibition.
